Hi,

After I have imported and culled my files, I place the DNG's within collection sets and collections. I will conduct the majority of my editing within LR, but I often use the "Edit In" option to edit a file in Nik Effects etc.
I would like the edited file to be automatically added to the collection I have the original DNG in.
Why doesn't it do this automatically?
Have I missed something within the preferences of LR?
Is it not possible and I have to add manually as I have been doing?

Thanks.

A couple of things should have been addressed in your post. A proper answer can't be given without more information about your LR version. I think it was some time since LR6 was released that the Edit In function began cataloging the derivative file from the Edit In. A call to PSCC will result in the derivative file being also included in the static collection that contained the source file. Whether this happens with the ancient Nik Collection I can't say. It does happen with other plugins like On1PhotoRAW.
If you want to begin with an upgrade to LR6, then possibly the Nik Collection tools will work to. If they don't, then you are out of luck with Nik unless you also upgrade to the annual subscription which includes PSCC Once you have PSCC, you can call the Nik Plug ins from there and when you return to LR you derivative will be included in the same collection.
The Other option is to built a smart collection that has criteria that causes both the source image and the Nik Derivative image to be included in the Smart Collection.

Hi Cletus,

Thanks for the speedy reply.
I am using LR Version 6.9, PS CS6 Version 13.06. A file exported to CS6 for editing does not get included in my original collection either.

Thanks.

If it is not working in CS6(PS13) then I would want a detailed step by step account of your workflow to PS13 and back. ACR7 (or what ACR version you have installed with PS13) is not compatible with LR6.9 (ACR 9.x equivalent) and you are required to create an intermediate TIFF/PSD file containing all of the LR adjustments before calling PS13 or any third party app (like On1 PhotoRAW or even Nik SilverEfexPro). I just tried this in a static collection and with both PSCC2014 and Nik SilverEfexPro, I watch LR create a new TIFF file and place it in my static collection along side my original RAW file This happens automatically with LR6.9/LRCC2015.9 as I said before the second app opens with the already created file.

Now you realize that this is only possible with static collections, not smart collection which depend upon criteria matching before an image file is included in the smart collection. Also if you have the checkbox labeled "Stack with original" checked and all stacks collapsed, then you might not see the derivative image in the collection even though it is already there. Another issue is grid sorting order. If the "Added Order" is chosen for sort order, then the added derivative file might be off your screen at the end of the grid.

I would like the edited file to be automatically added to the collection I have the original DNG in.

From memory, I think it only gets added to the collection you're viewing at the time.

Yes, this is correct. I have been basing my posts on the assumption that the current (viewing) collection is the collection that the Edit-In originates from. There is no way that LR can guess which of the multitude of other collections that might contain the source image would be also expected to gain the derivative image as well.

Well here's a feature request. It would be nice to be able to select which collections of the original to have the derivative image belong to as well. At least in my workflow I usually am working on a project/shoot that has a collection "project - all" and some additional collections that are different scenes. Right now I am working in one of the scene collections as the source and when I go into Photoshop the new derivative is added to the scene but not to "all". So for now I have to remember to go back and manually update.

A list of check boxes for each static collection for the source images would be helpful perhaps.

Hi,
My workflow is as follows:-
Import images > Cull > Rename> Keywords > Add To Collections.
When I need to edit an image, I open the relevant collection in the Library Module, select the image and left click, Edit In (ColorEfex, PS, etc.). When I have completed the edit, I save it from the appropriate programme, it reappears in LR as a tiff file, but it is not in the collection of the original file.
I checked in PS for the version of ACR and I get the following:-

When I click on Edit In and select PS as the external editor I always get the following dialog box:-

What option should I choose?
I have checked for updates and Adobe Updater replies that all programmes are up to date.

Thanks for the help.
