That’s what I do and it works well. I keep my most recent work on the laptop drive and then migrate to external drive once finished.

Yes, I set that up yesterday and it is working. Just didn't get it done before I did a massive sync of files after my holiday, so I need to go and sort all those photos out. Thanks for that.
I have a similar thing. The numbers add up for the number of images, there is sometimes an info file that doesn't count.
It did take a while to sync everything, but it gives you a useful display in the preferences pane under "lightroom synch) as to what is actually going on.
